Steam solenoid actuated valves are manufactured from either Brass, Stainless Steel or Bronze with either direct acting or pressure assisted function, common miniature sizes range from 1/8, 1/4 or 3/8 BSP or NPT thread with standard sizes from 3/8" right through to 2" BSP or NPT thread and flanged PN16 or ANSI150Lb sizes DN10 to DN100.
Most steam solenoid valves are fitted with PTFE seals as standard which are the best solution for most aggressive steam applications however some more specialised applications FFKM or Rulon elastomer seals can be used, but are cost inhibiting.
A long lasting well made steam valve will be fitted with virgin or better grades of PTFE giving better sealing characteristics and longer working life compared to others, but due to the hard nature of PTFE sealing; it is important that all debris and other contamination upstream is removed and process pipework is cleaned prior to installing any steam solenoid valve. It is also recommended that a Y type filter is installed before (upstream) of the steam solenoid valve to help prevent dirt ingress.
Additionally if the dynamic PTFE sealing has been Graphite impregnated it will offer much improved wear resistance and extended service life. Below is a short list of the more commonly used steam solenoid valves,
